The Prophetic Vision
Here is the photograph of every man or woman who reads this page as he or she has appeared in the past, appears now or will appear in the future. Here is the story of that man or woman. Study it closely and see just which one is YOU.
Are you the baby? If you are a male, that baby represents what you were when your mother coddled you, and the vision that floats above its head is the vision she held of your future attainment;—a handsome man, a capable man, a man of strong and stalwart personality living in luxury and ease won by his masterful achievements.
Has that “vision” materialized as yet? Are you the man she saw in her dream-picture or are you the man on the park-bench of Life waiting for Opportunity to drift by and tap your on the shoulder, brooding in discontent and misery over past failures and too dispirited to take up your burden and make another effort? You may not be either literally; may never have sat on a park-bench in fact not tasted of luxury as she conceived it, but these pictures are symbolic.
They represent the man who is “UP” in Life and the man who is “DOWN” and sitting still.
You are one or the other.
Which is it?
Are you the woman who held a baby to her breast and dreamed a dream of his splendid future or are you a woman not yet a mother but dreaming of the bliss to come some day and already in your secret heart planning the things you would have your son accomplish? Read this carefully.
No vision that any one mind can possibly conceive of another person’s final attainment is trustworthy, fair or logical and may easily be intensely harmful no matter how beautifully it is colored for the simple reason that it is necessarily based on the desires and preferences of the person creating the vision and not on the individual characteristics, disposition, nature and qualifications of the person concerned. It is always based on what YOU want them to be and not what they are FITTED BY NATURE to become.
The Mothers of America have done more to fill the park-benches with derelicts and discouraged failures than any other influence simply because in their ignorance and impetuosity of their love they have tried to force their own visions upon their sons and mold them into the men they want them to be rather than into the men Nature had intended them to be from the beginning.
Every mother has visions of future greatness for her child. It is her justification for the pain and suffering of bringing him into the world and as she holds him close to her breast she dreams of his final maturity to a wonderful man;—a man whose vast intelligence and magnificence will hold the world in awe. She sees him surrounded by wealth, the result of his wonderful achievements, and counts that wealth in the magnificent homes he will build, the great factories he will manage, the farms he will own, the army of workmen, clerks and servants he will employ, the motor-cars, yachts and jewels he will buy, and then, inspired by that perfect love that is all emotionalism and vanity and seldom intelligence, she proceeds to do everything in her power to set him on the road toward the achievement of her dreams, fitting him for a profession which she fondly believes will do credit to him and in time make all these other things possible.
Without any knowledge of business herself, she calmly takes the responsibility of selecting her son’s future profession and as in the case of the Social Butterfly who attempts to force a number six foot into a number four shoe, she strives to push and pinch and force her son into the professional “shoe” she has selected for him without any consideration for her son’s natural adaptation for the situation.
She does not know, nor does the average man, that when Nature brings a thing into existence, be it bud or man, she, with her absolute understanding of every element involved in its creation and of the purposes for which she has intended it, has mapped out the course of Life best suited to the “thing” in the final achievement of that evolution or “progress” for which it is individually responsible. More than that Nature never makes a failure; never tolerates one. No tree, bush, flower, weed, breed or species is permitted to exist that is not perfect or progressive. Anything which through resistance to normal law or through outside influence, fails to make the most of its inherent possibilities, is quickly withered, cut off, cast out or (in the case of Man) dropped by the way-side to finish his days on the park-bench.
And Nature is very frank and very fair and very “open” in all her plans for any man’s development. She has written them on a scroll as big as the heavens and set it where the man can read and where the mother could study them and weave them into her vision if she would in order that both man and his mother might know in advance the thing he has been fitted for and might intelligently assist toward its ultimate achievement. She has given them the Stars as guides and through the Science of Astrology she has written in advance the whole history of his life as it should be lived for its best attainments.
The mother who ignores this message and tries to force her baby-son into a channel that suits her fancy, commits a crime against him that is no less a crime because it is the result of her ignorance.
She cannot known his nature.
She cannot choose with wisdom.
If she tries to “force” him she only crushes out his natural tendencies, destroys his inherent self-confidence and substitutes habits that are necessarily artificial, superficial and ineffectual simply because they do not spring from within him but are hung on him from the outside like the rest of his clothes, to make a good appearance before the neighbors. And that’s the real secret behind the average mother’s “vision” of her son. She wants him to be just a little richer, just a little more respected, just a little higher socially than any one about her. She wants to see him in fine clothes and a white collar moving with superior grace among the lowly. Never does she want to see him sweat-marked or grimed with the dirt of work! What mother has ever visioned her son in a pair of dirty overalls and a dirty undershirt standing in a muddy ditch laying a water-main or swinging a sledge on a railroad track. And yet where would the glory and the progress and the wealth of today be but for the men of ditch and track?
Isn’t it better to be a good plumber than a hungry, unsuccessful lawyer? Isn’t it finer to be a successful farmer feeding the multitude than to be a poor musician or an unsuccessful doctor? Isn’t it better to do anything well, no matter how humble that thing may be, than to fail at something else,—something you don’t like to do, never were intended to do and couldn’t succeed in doing in a thousand years. It’s the misplaced energy, the personal vanity and the selfish ambition of mothers that send men through life unfitted for their proper work and crushes them in the end under the consciousness of failure, leaving them to fall by the wayside upon the park-benches or worse yet, to descend to the criminals and end in a prison-cell.
Here is one law that every mother who loves her baby and honestly wishes it well should know and always remember. No man can work to his best who does not work to the end that Nature has called him. No man can know that end without first knowing himself, his potentialities, his “fitness” and the contributing influences and opportunities that surround him. No man (or mother) can know these things except as he obtain the knowledge from Mother Nature through the chart she has unfolded before him for the personal guidance. No “vision” that is fair to the baby, no plan that is safe for the man can be created safely or effectively that is not based on a careful study of this Message written in the STARS!
The stars alone can tell of life! The stars alone can point a man’s best possibilities. The stars alone can advise his profession, guard his associations, choose his companions, order his house, remove worries and responsibilities from his shoulders, leave him untrammeled to do the thing Nature has intended for him to do and in the end achieve the very thing (the very happiness and success) his mother’s love has dreamed for him, for after all, ignorant and impulsive as it may be, the mother’s dream for her baby’s fortune is a note of Divine prescience. She senses the “end” in her soul and desires it for him in that flash of Divinity given to her at the moment of her creation of a man-child, but when the “flash” is gone and only the “dream” of what she has seen with spirit-eyes remains to her, she tries in her blind ignorance to snatch at Fate and force her son into unnatural channels hoping to win the desired “end” regardless of the road she chooses, when if she would but leave him intelligently to the laws of Nature and guide his course by the STARS, he would of his own efforts attain the very thing she has desired for him.
NO MOTHER WHO IS AN HONEST MOTHER CAN AFFORD TO RAISE HER BABY WITHOUT A FORECAST OF HIS LIFE AS DEFINED BY THE STARS THAT DIRECT HIM.
NO MAN CAN AFFORD TO RISK WASTING HIS LIFE BY FOLLOWING THE PROFESSION SOMEONE ELSE HAS CHOSEN FOR HIM UNTIL HE HAS COMPARED THAT CHOICE WITH THE DICTATES OF THAT SAME FORECAST AND SATISFIED HIMSELF THAT HE IS ON THE PATH TO SUCCESS INSTEAD OF THE PATH TO FAILURE AND PARK-BENCHES.
If her child falls sick, a mother does not hesitate to call in a doctor and spend two dollars to have him diagnose the trouble and supply the baby’s needs. She does not trust her own ignorance in such a matter nor does she begrudge the money, and yet—when it comes to correctly diagnosing the baby’s whole life and prescribing the proper treatment that will attain the highest success and happiness, she will often hesitate over spending the same money for a Forecast. Is that intelligent?
